Overview
Arusha National Park is a hidden gem located just a short drive from Arusha city. Despite being one of Tanzania's smallest parks, it offers an incredible diversity of landscapes and wildlife in a compact area. The park features three spectacular landmarks: 1. Mount Meru - Tanzania's second highest peak (4,566m) 2. Momella Lakes - A series of seven crater lakes with different algae attracting various bird species 3. Ngurdoto Crater - Often called 'Little Ngorongoro' Wildlife Highlights: - Giraffes (large population) - Buffalo herds - Zebras - Warthogs - Colobus monkeys (black and white) - Flamingos (seasonal at Momella Lakes) - Over 400 bird species The park offers excellent game viewing, beautiful scenery, and relatively few visitors compared to other northern circuit parks. The diverse habitats include montane forest, acacia woodland, alpine desert, and moorland.
Day Trip Itinerary
Continue with an afternoon game drive through the park's diverse habitats. Look for giraffes, zebras, and more wildlife. Visit the Fig Tree Arch and other interesting geological formations. Return to Arusha by 5:00 PM.
Enjoy a picnic lunch at a scenic spot with views of Mount Meru. Listen to the sounds of the forest and watch for troops of black and white colobus monkeys in the nearby trees.
Depart from your Arusha hotel at 6:30 AM. Drive to Arusha National Park entrance (approximately 45 minutes). Begin with a game drive around Ngurdoto Crater, often called "Little Ngorongoro." Look for buffalo herds, elephants, warthogs, and various antelope species. The crater floor is rich in wildlife and offers excellent photographic opportunities.
Proceed to the stunning Momella Lakes. These seven crater lakes are famous for their different colors caused by various algae. Watch for flamingos (seasonal), Egyptian geese, pelicans, and other water birds. The lakes are set against the backdrop of Mount Meru, creating breathtaking scenery.
